Ekhaya FC Youth produced a mature and disciplined performance to outclass Blantyre District Football League leaders Mighty Wanderers Youth, securing a convincing 2–0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium.
What happened
The young Cowboys wasted no time in stamping their authority on the contest and were rewarded just after the 17-minute mark.
Hope Mustafa broke the deadlock with a well-taken finish from open play after a fine assist from Francis Chisambi, capping off a bright spell of pressure from Mphatso Chihami’s side.
Buoyed by the early advantage, Ekhaya continued to dominate proceedings and doubled their lead ten minutes later.
McDonald Banda stepped up and showed great composure from the spot, calmly converting a penalty to put daylight between the two sides and underline Ekhaya’s control of the match.
The league-leading Nomads attempted to claw their way back into the contest with brief spells of possession, but Ekhaya’s defensive shape and game management ensured they remained largely untroubled. The first half ended with the Cowboys firmly in front and in command.
Mighty Wanderers Youth returned from the interval with renewed intent, looking to mount a comeback.
However, clear-cut chances proved hard to come by as Ekhaya continued to look the more dangerous side on the break.
Frank Tembo, Chisambi and Banda all had opportunities to extend the lead, but failed to apply the finishing touch that would have completely killed the tie.
Drama arrived late in added time when the young Nomads broke through on a one-on-one situation, only to be denied by a heroic last-minute block from Hope Mustafa, the man who had set Ekhaya on their way earlier in the match.
The final whistle confirmed a deserved 2–0 victory for Ekhaya FC Youth.
What It Means
The result sees second-placed Ekhaya FC Youth keep the pressure firmly on the league leaders who lead with 61 points, reducing the gap to seven points with just three matches remaining in the campaign.
What the Coach Said
