Match Report: Blue Eagles 2-1 Ekhaya FC

Ekhaya FC endured a tough Sunday afternoon on the road, falling 2-1 to Blue Eagles in their FDH Bank Premiership opener at Civo Stadium.

Tonic Viyuyu opened the scoring inside the opening half an hour before Pius Saka doubled the lead  a few minutes before the halftime. Blessings Malinda pulled one back soon after the restart but The Cowboys could not go on to stage a comeback.

How it unfolded

Cautiously, the two sides took time to settle in the tie. Clear-cut chances were limited early on, though the hosts showed slightly more attacking intent with the first effort on target.

A golden chance for Blue Eagles went begging, and that moment sparked a response from The Cowboys, who began to see more of the ball.

Sholigah, set up nicely by Allen Chihana, had a big opportunity to break the deadlock but couldn’t convert with his off-target header.

Thereafter, the hosts took the lead from what looked like a tame delivery, with Viyuyu finding himself in the right place to head home. Tizola was well positioned at the near post, but somehow the soft header slipped past him to give the hosts the advantage.

Just as The Cowboys began to respond, the hosts doubled their lead, with Saka reacting quickly after a lapse in concentration from the center-backs.

We made a triple change just before the break with Charles Mafaiti, James Lumbe, and Vincent Salawira coming on for Chimwemwe Chunga, Moses Banda, and Fanizo Mwansambo. The changes added fresh energy but the break arrived with the scoreline still 2-0.

After the restart, Ekhaya looked much sharper, creating more chances and applying sustained pressure. However, the hosts stood firm defensively, throwing bodies on the line to make crucial blocks.

Eventually the pressure paid off as Malinda pulled one back, striking from outside the area to be beat the keeper.

Fired up we kept the hosts under pressure for a lengthy time. Chihana nearly made the difference with a one-on-one chance, but his effort was deflected wide, and the resulting corner came to nothing with little time left on the clock.

Wongani Kaponya was later introduced for Isaiah Nyirenda as Ekhaya pushed forward, but despite their improved second-half display, The Cowboys fell just short, losing 2-1.

What It Means
It’s a disappointing start to the campaign for The Cowboys, but there were clear positives, especially the response after halftime and the attacking intent shown. Fine margins and missed chances ultimately made the difference.

What follows next
Ekhaya FC will now turn their attention to next week’s fixture against Red Lions, where they will look to bounce back and secure their first points of the season.
