Ekhaya FC suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Mafco FC at Chitowe Stadium on Sunday, with Clifford Msowoya’s goal ten minutes from time separating the two sides in a tightly contested FDH Bank Premiership encounter.
The result sees The Cowboys drop one place to seventh in the standings, while Mafco, despite remaining bottom of the table in 16th position, move to 16 points with a potentially significant victory in their battle against relegation.
It was a contest in which Ekhaya enjoyed considerable spells of possession and threatened on several occasions but ultimately struggled to turn their attacking momentum into a decisive goal.
A BALANCED START, BUT NO BREAKTHROUGH
The Cowboys made a relatively positive start, with the opening exchanges evenly contested. Ekhaya showed early intent, winning possession high up the pitch through an effective press but failing to capitalise on a promising opportunity that followed.
The hosts responded by finding their own rhythm, making for an increasingly open contest. By the 20th minute, the game had developed into an end-to-end affair. Mafco enjoyed a spell of pressure, testing Clever Mkungula between the posts, while Ekhaya carried the threat still.

John Mchema and Allen Chihana came particularly close to breaking the deadlock after combining in a promising counterattacking move, only to be denied at close range.
As the half progressed, The Cowboys began to see more of the ball, but Mafco remained disciplined and difficult to break down. Despite Ekhaya’s attempts to dictate proceedings, the hosts held firm, with the game still goalless as the clock approached half-time.
COWBOYS TURN UP THE PRESSURE AFTER THE RESTART
Ekhaya resumed with much of the possession, continuing to dominate the ball but encountering the same challenge that had characterised the closing stages of the first half: finding a way through Mafco’s defensive organisation and aggressive behaviour.
With the breakthrough proving elusive, The Cowboys turned to their bench for fresh impetus. A double substitution saw Chimwemwe Chunga and Isaiah Nyirenda introduced for Vincent Salawira and Blessings Malinda.
The changes coincided with a noticeable upsurge in Ekhaya’s attacking play, as the visitors began to apply greater pressure in search of an opener. Allen Chihana came agonisingly close during this spell, unleashing an effort that required a brilliant save to keep Mafco in the contest.

With fifteen minutes remaining, the game began to open up. Both sides showed greater willingness to attempt efforts from range, sensing that the deadlock could still be broken as the final stages approached. However, it was Mafco who found the decisive moment.
MSOWOYA DELIVERS THE LATE BLOW
With ten minutes remaining, Clifford Msowoya struck for the hosts, finding the breakthrough that had eluded both sides for much of the afternoon. The goal changed the complexion of the contest, leaving The Cowboys with little time to recover and force their way back into the game.
Ekhaya could not find a response before the final whistle, and Mafco held on to secure a 1-0 victory. For The Cowboys, it was a disappointing afternoon in Nkhotakota, particularly after enjoying promising spells and creating opportunities that could have produced a different outcome.
The defeat extends Ekhaya’s difficult record on the road. The Cowboys have now managed just a single point away from home, a statistic that will demand attention as the campaign progresses.
THE ROAD AHEAD
The Cowboys now turn their attention to the upcoming international break, which offers an opportunity to regroup, assess the performance and work on the areas that require improvement.
Ekhaya will return to Premiership action against Civil Service United, with the focus firmly on delivering a response and getting their campaign back on track.
